Message from the Editor-In-Chief

Greetings CAPED!

The Spring 2020 E-Communique will definitely spark your interests and further your education on the students we serve!

Although we work daily in this field of postsecondary education and disability, we all know that it is ever changing and evolving. There is always something to learn to make us better counselors, educators, staff, and administrators. The compassion and level of unending learning sure shows when I receive more articles than I can publish! We here at the Communique truly appreciate the time each one of you takes out of your busy schedules to further our knowledge base.

In this Spring 2020 E-Communique you will learn more about ADA and Section 508 and what strategies AHEAD is working on for compliance throughout the community colleges and universities in regards to access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT)- Using the AHEAD Program Standards and Performance Indicators as a Strategy to Ensure Electronic Access. Very informative articles on Applied Behavioral Analysis Benefits in Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Universal Design. You will also read an eye-opening and disheartening problem on campuses throughout about Homeless Crisis Among Students in Higher Education: A Call to Action. You will also find updates on LD and APE CIG!

Our Feature Article is from Mr. JahB Prescott, English Professor at MiraCosta College. He discloses, so beautifully, the challenges he faced in school related to his LD in Math, and how those challenges assist him daily with guiding his students to seek out their success, be their own advocates, and learn to let go of the stigmas.

Hope you all enjoy the Spring 2020 E-Communique as much as I do! Big thanks to Adrian Gonzalez and Armand Santos for making the E-Communique look so good! Also, want to thank Deborah Michelle at Cypress College and Rosemarie Cervantes at Pasadena City College for assisting me with editing, huge help ladies!
